GRE Test Preparation Workshops

According to an article from U.S. News and World Report, more than 700,000 people take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) for admission to graduate or business school each year.  In fact, Educational Testing Services reports that now over 800 MBA programs worldwide accept the revised GRE as an alternative to the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).  The GRE includes questions that incorporate verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing.

The GRE is similar to the SAT, but there are some significant differences that you will want to know if you plan to take the test.  First, the GRE is a computer-adaptive test and is not done with paper and pencil.  The U.S. News and World Report article explains that, “the difficulty of the questions is based on the accuracy of your answers to previous questions. The better you perform on the first sets of 20 verbal and quantitative reasoning questions, the harder the next sets of 20 questions will be.” 

At GSU’s School of Extended Learning, we offer a GRE Test Preparation course.  During the course, you will acquire strategies in math, reading comprehension, writing, and verbal and quantitative skills to improve GRE scores using acclaimed Cambridge test preparation materials.  Textbook, practice tests, and all course materials are included in the fee. 

By taking the workshop, you will more fully understand the requirements, scoring, and logistics of the GRE.   In addition you will recognize specific question types on the GRE and become familiar with the skill sets that the GRE seeks to test.

Upcoming Workshops on Faculty Development in International Business

As the leading business school educator in the area, GSU’s College of Business and Public Administration is providing a series of workshops for faculty at community colleges in the region.  The Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB) workshops are designed to instruct community college business faculty on how to bring international content into the classroom and expand their classroom knowledge and skills.  

Offered through our School of Extended Learning and sponsored by a US Department of Education grant, the FDIB workshops will be led by highly experienced CBPA faculty who are content experts on the presented topics.  The workshops will be held on Wednesday, June 10 through Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 9 am – 4 pm, and because of the education grant, are offer at a minimum cost to participants.   Upon successfully completing the two-day workshop, participants will receive a “Certificate of Completion.”

The two-day workshop features two modules.  FDIB’s Day 1 is on the Management in the Changing Global Environment and includes:  Understanding national culture; Global leadership and team management; Managing social responsibility in a global context; and Global human resource management.  On Day 2, entitled Global Financial Economics, participants will be presented with the following workshops: Finance and economics; International financial markets; Exchange rates; and International diversification.

Two of the workshop presenters are Dr. Stephen Wagner and Dr. Michael Williams.  As an Associate Professor of Management for the CBPA, Dr. Stephen Wagner received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Northern Illinois University. Dr. Michael Williams is an Assistant Professor of Finance at GSU and received his PhD in Finance (2012) from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

GSU’s School of Extended Learning: Off-Campus Locations

GSU’s School of Extended Learning is designed to meets the needs of life-long learners by providing a wide range of courses in a very flexible manner.  One of the ways we do this is through offering several off-campus locations throughout the greater Chicago area. 

One of our larger off-campus sites, GSU Naperville Education Center (NEC) in Naperville, IL, offers various graduate degree programs that includes a M.A. in Psychology and School Counseling, several Bachelor of Arts programs, Communications Workshops and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt courses.  Our Bachelor of Arts degree programs in criminal justice, psychology and interdisciplinary studies at the NEC are designed for students entering with an associate’s degree or 60 college credit hours.  Most of our B.A. programs will except up to 80 credits.

The Governors State University at South Suburban College and University Center is another of our off-campus sites located in Oak Forest, IL.   Currently Our College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Division of Communication Visual and Performing Arts, offers one credit hour undergraduate/graduate level special topic courses from the Communication program curriculum.  Please see our website for more information. 

In a partnership between Triton College in River Grove, IL and GSU, students may now earn a B.A. in Criminal Justice or in Communication from the College of Arts and Sciences.   The College of Health and Human Services also offers a Bachelor of Health Administration or Social Work.  Furthermore, a new Master of Arts in Criminal Justice cohort was started in Spring 2015 at the campus.  

The James R. Thompson Center in Chicago offers another convenient opportunity to pursue GSU’s exceptional graduate programs at an off-campus site.  Currently students can pursue their Master of Public Administration or a Master of Arts Political and Justice Studies.   These accredited programs are offered as evening classes and are adult focused coursed taught by industry leaders.  We also have special incentives for veterans.  Please see our website for details.

ESL Students – Improve Your Skills

If you are a student in the Chicago area and want to improve your English language skills, Governors State University offers a program you may be interested in through our School of Extended Learning.  The American Language and Culture Institute’s (ALCI) program is designed and taught by a professional faculty to prepare students academically, socially, and culturally for success as university students.

Our Intensive ESL Program is for both international and U.S. students and is available year-round.  It is taught by an ESL faculty that is experienced in assisting students who consider themselves English Language Learners, and the program utilizes cutting-edge teaching methods, curriculum design, and up-to-date research.    

Students are provided with specialized course work that includes Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, Integrated Studies, Multimodal Composing, Pronunciation and Cross Cultural Contexts.  Our program is also intended to help student with TOEFL test preparation. 

Regardless of whether you are a beginning learner or a student with more advanced English skills, our program can help to prepare you to do better academically at the university level.   Please keep in mind that students applying to the Intensive ESL Program are not automatically guaranteed admittance to Governor State’s undergraduate or graduate programs.  Students are still required to meet the university standards for admission, and the application process requires a transcript evaluation as well as TOEFL® or IELTS scores.
